Gray granite, flamed Lime plaster Walnut, oiled Bronze, patinated
The street sees a wall. Everything else is on the other side of it.
From the road this is a seven-foot granite plinth and almost nothing else. No windows, no gate visible at an angle, no indication of scale. The entrance is a gap in the stone you do not see until you are level with it. This is a deliberately unfriendly street elevation and it is the reason the house works. Behind it the lot opens into a sequence of three courts, descending gently north to south with the natural fall of the land. The first is paved and holds the entrance. The second is planted and is the center of the house. The third is a shallow water court off the primary bedroom and is the only part of the property visible from more than one level. All living spaces face into these courts. No habitable room has a window onto a neighbor or the street, which on a lot this tight in Brentwood is close to impossible and took two redesigns to achieve. The granite is flamed and laid in courses of varying height, with the tallest at the base. Lime plaster internally, burnished, in a warm off-white that shifts noticeably between morning and evening. Walnut joinery throughout, oiled rather than lacquered. Completed in 2023 and lived in for eight months before the owners relocated. Essentially new, with the settling already done.
